Business BREAKING NEWS ! Intel & BMW vont faire équipe ! Ceci étant, cela n’est plus surprenant, en 2014, j’avais publié la news que nVidia & Audi Team up! Le CES2015 & CES2016 nous l’a montré ! Mais c’est marrant de voir les acteurs de l’industrie IT et les acteurs de l’industrie Auto se rapprocher, quand on est autant passionné par le Hardware & l’Automotive depuis les années ’90. Il y a 20 ans, on imaginait pas que ces grands constructeurs feront équipe un jour. Bref, revenons à l’objet de la news. (FR/EN text full story)

De nouveaux services à la mobilité en environnement urbain basés sur des flottes d’automobiles autonomes. BMW Group, Intel et Mobileye créent une plateforme ouverte destinée à la prochaine génération d’automobiles, afin de créer la technologie autonome la plus sûre, depuis la fermeture des portes jusqu’aux bases de données. Les trois sociétés partagent la même vision et le même objectif pour aligner l’industrie sur une plateforme de standards communs, afin de lancer rapidement sur le marché des véhicules totalement autonomes.
La conduite autonome est un enjeu capital sur le marché des voitures haut-de-gamme. Ainsi, Mercedes-Benz (sur sa Classe E), Volvo (sur sa gamme 90) et Tesla (sur les Model S et Model X) proposent déjà tous un système capable de s’occuper de la régulation de vitesse et de direction sur voie rapide et en embouteillages, avec pour condition de garder une main sur le volant. Bien entendu, BMW, le leader de marché de l’automobile haut-de-gamme, ne peut ignorer le sujet. Comme ses concurrentes, la limousine BMW Série 7 est déjà équipée d’un système de pilotage automatique.
Toutefois, le constructeur à l’Hélice compte proposer à termes des véhicules complètement autonomes. Un premier aperçu de cette esprit a été présenté via le concept-car BMW Vision Next 100, pour célébrer le centenaire du groupe BMW. Le constructeur bavarois a choisi de lancer un modèle spécifique, qui sera baptisé iNext, pour mettre en avant la conduite autonome. Ainsi, le constructeur reste fidèle à la stratégie choisie pour les voitures électriques et hybrides rechargeables : les BMW i3 et BMW i8, modèles spécifiques, ont ouvert la route des high-technologies, avant que celles n’arrivent de série sur les autres modèles de la gamme BMW 7serie puis sur le reste de la gamme.
BMW & Intel & Mobileye team up!
BMW, Intel et Mobileye « joignent leurs forces pour faire des véhicules autonomes et des concepts de mobilité du futur une réalité », comme déclaré dans le communiqué commun. Les 3 marques « se sont mises d’accord sur un ensemble d’objectifs et de jalons pour livrer des voitures pleinement autonomes basées sur une architecture de référence commune ».
Les trois groupes veulent tester à court terme un véhicule doté d’un stade avancé d’automatisation, avant d’étendre les tests à une flotte entière en 2017. Elles comptent également mettre sur pied une plate-forme ouverte aux autres entreprises sur les niveaux les plus avancés de la conduite automatisée – depuis le stade actuel où le conducteur peut quitter la route des yeux de temps à autres, jusqu’à celui où il n’a plus du tout besoin d’intervenir dans la voiture.
Intel est le numéro un des semi-conducteurs et Mobileye revendique la place de leader mondial des systèmes anti-collisions, deux spécialités indispensables pour développer un véhicule capable, grâce à ses capteurs, ses caméras et à la transmission rapide des données, de conduire sans intervention humaine.
Les autres constructeurs sont également très actifs sur ce marché en devenir, à l’image de Volvo et Ford, aux côtés de son précurseur, Google, mais aussi d’Uber et Lyft qui voudrait que leurs flottes de véhicules de tourismes avec chauffeur… deviennent autonomes.

BMW Group, Intel and Mobileye Team Up to Bring Fully Autonomous Driving to Streets by 2021
Munich – July 1, 2016. BMW Group, Intel, and Mobileye are joining forces to make self-driving vehicles and future mobility concepts become a reality. The three leaders from the automotive, technology and computer vision and machine learning industries are collaborating to bring solutions for highly and fully automated driving into series production by 2021.
The future of automated driving promises to change lives and societies for the better. But the path to get to a fully autonomous world is complex and will require end-to-end solutions that integrate intelligence across the network, from door locks to the data center. Transportation providers of the future must harness rapidly evolving technologies, collaborate with totally new partners, and prepare for disruptive opportunities.
Together with Intel and Mobileye, the BMW Group will develop the necessary solutions and innovative systems for highly and fully automated driving to bring these technologies into series production by 2021. The BMW iNEXT model will be the foundation for BMW Group’s autonomous driving strategy and set the basis for fleets of fully autonomous vehicles, not only on highways but also in urban environments for the purpose of automated ridesharing solutions.
BMW Group, Intel and Mobileye are convinced that automated driving technologies will make travel safer and easier. The goal of the collaboration is to develop future-proofed solutions that enable the drivers to not only take their hands off the steering wheel, but reach the so called “eyes off” (level 3) and ultimately the “mind off” (level 4) level transforming the driver’s in-car time into leisure or work time. This level of autonomy would enable the vehicle, on a technical level, to achieve the final stage of traveling “driver off” (level 5) without a human driver inside. This establishes the opportunity for self-driving fleets by 2021 and lays the foundation for entirely new business models in a connected, mobile world.
On July 1, 2016, the three partners were present at the BMW Group Headquarters in Munich to express their commitment to strive for an industry standard and define an open platform for autonomous driving. The common platform will address level 3 to level 5 automated driving and will be made available to multiple car vendors and other industries who could benefit from autonomous machines and deep machine learning.
The companies have agreed to a set of deliverables and milestones to deliver fully autonomous cars based on a common reference architecture. Near term, the companies will demonstrate an autonomous test drive with a highly automated driving (HAD) prototype. In 2017 the platform will extend to fleets with extended autonomous test drives.

In addition, Mobileye Road Experience Management (REM) technology will provide real-time precise localization and model the driving scene to essentially support fully autonomous driving.”

Intel brings a comprehensive portfolio of technology to power and connect billions of smart and connected devices, including cars. To handle the complex workloads required for autonomous cars in urban environments Intel provides the compute power that scales from Intel Atom to Intel Xeon processors delivering up to a total of 100 teraflops of power efficient performance without having to rewrite code.
