Le 17 juin 2016, Honda et la Fondation Jean Graton ont présenté une « Art Car » lors des 24 Heures du Mans Auto 2016 et du Festival of Speed de Goodwood. On est le 17 juillet 2016, j’en profite pour publier ce post Auto dédié à la Honda Art Car Jean Graton.

Outre la réalisation d’une série spéciale « Civic Vaillante » d’ores et déjà disponible dans le réseau Honda Automobiles, le partenariat conclu entre Honda et la Fondation Jean Graton – le « père » de Michel Vaillant – se traduit aujourd’hui par la présentation de la « Honda Art Car Jean Graton », une voiture à la livrée inspirée par les aventures du plus célèbre des pilotes automobiles de la bande dessinée.
Créé par Jean Graton en 1957, le personnage du pilote automobile Michel Vaillant bénéficie depuis près de 60 ans d’un véritable culte de la part des amateurs de sport automobile.
Michel Vaillant ?
Michel Vaillant est une série de bande dessinée créée par Jean Graton en 1957.
Michel Vaillant est un pilote automobile français, courant pour l’écurie de la marque créée par son père : Vaillante. Il est un des meilleurs pilotes du monde mais il doit toujours régler des problèmes intérieurs ou extérieurs à la course.
Le personnage de Michel Vaillant, créé par Jean Graton, fait son apparition en 1957 dans Tintin (également appelé Le Journal de Tintin à certaines époques, est un magazine hebdomadaire de bande dessinée réaliste), dans une histoire courte en quatre planches intitulée La 24e Heure.
Suivront quatre autres histoires du même format consacrées à Michel Vaillant, qui testent l’accueil du public. Celui-ci est enthousiaste : les jeunes lecteurs de Tintin adoptent le héros de Jean Graton et le feu vert est donné pour la réalisation de la première aventure à suivre de Michel Vaillant. C’est le grand départ, la série sera publiée dans l’hebdomadaire Tintin jusqu’en 1976.
Le premier album, intitulé Le Grand Défi, paraît en 1959. L’auteur est bientôt assisté d’une équipe regroupée sous le nom de « Studio Graton », tandis que son troisième fils, Philippe Graton, devient en 1994 le scénariste de la série.
Tout au long des décennies suivantes et des soixante-dix tomes de sa saga automobile, Jean Graton va créer un univers riche et cohérent. Il imagine toute une galerie de personnages : le clan Vaillant, le pilote américain Steve Warson, l’adversaire no 1 des Vaillant, le Leader, et sa fille Ruth, les « méchants » Bob Cramer et Hawkins… et emmène ses lecteurs sur les circuits d’Europe et d’Amérique : Le Mans, Indianapolis, Monaco… Des circuits représentés avec d’autant plus de réalisme et de minutie que le dessinateur prend l’habitude de s’y rendre en personne. Jean Graton devient même l’ami de nombreux pilotes, par exemple Jacky Ickx. Certains, tels Alain Prost, avoueront devoir leur vocation à la lecture de Michel Vaillant.
En 2007 sort le 70e album de Michel Vaillant : ce sera le dernier de la saison 1 de la série. En effet, Philippe Graton met fin au Studio Graton et décide, pour relancer la série, de choisir des auteurs à part entière. Pour développer ses nouvelles idées, il fait appel au scénariste belge Denis Lapière, puis il créée l’association de deux dessinateurs français : Marc Bourgne (chargé des story-board et des personnages) et Benjamin Benéteau (dessinateur des décors, concepteur des voitures et des scènes de course). Au nom du fils, tome 1 de la seconde saison de Michel Vaillant, sort en novembre 2012.
Entre-temps, depuis le 1er janvier 2010, Michel Vaillant est édité chez Dupuis2 dans le cadre d’un contrat de partenariat entre Graton Éditeur et les Éditions Dupuis.
A noter, en 2016, la sortie de l’album Renaissance, avec en arrière plan la Tour-Eiffel, et au premier plan des monoplaces de Formula-E.

À travers la série d’événements Michel Vaillant Art Strips, la Fondation Jean Graton a pour vocation de diffuser l’œuvre de Jean Graton, initialement conçue pour l’impression papier, vers de nouveaux publics et sous de nouvelles formes.
Conçue par Dominique Graton, Directrice Artistique de la Fondation Jean Graton et Philippe Ghielmetti, la ‘Honda Art Car Jean Graton’ est inspirée par le ‘Michel Vaillant Art Strip « À Fond ! »‘, dans lequel Michel Vaillant est représenté à la poursuite d’une Ferrari dans le tunnel de Monaco durant le GP 1974.
Un comic strip, ou simplement strip, est une bande dessinée de quelques cases disposées en une bande le plus souvent horizontale.
Cette « Art Car » sera l’une des voitures du WTCC à arborer, lors du festival de la vitesse de Goodwood, une livrée réalisée par un artiste.

L’élection de la plus belle Art Car a lieu au Festival of Speed de Goodwood, et s’est achevée sur la victoire de la Honda Art Car Jean Graton. L’esprit « vaillant » a été salué par Lord March, fondateur du Festival of Speed de Goodwood. Bravo à Dominique Graton pour le travail réalisé.

Forte de son succès au Festival of Speed de Goodwood, la Honda Art Car Jean Graton fera ses débuts en course automobile au Circuit Park de Zandvoort aux Pays-Bas ce week-end (15-17 juillet).
Une version TCR de la Civic Type R a été inscrite par la Fondation Jean Graton aux courses du TCR Benelux sur le circuit néerlandais.
Jean-Louis Dauger, Directeur du Développement de la Fondation Jean Graton, partagera la Civic TCR avec son ami, le fameux pilote portugais du World Touring Car Championship, Tiago Monteiro.
En hommage au héros de bande dessinée Michel Vaillant, la voiture portera son numéro fétiche, le 13, qui sera donc au départ !
L’inspiration de la Honda Art Car Jean Graton a été le Michel Vaillant Art Strip, « A Fond ! », qui représente Michel Vaillant au volant de sa Formule 1 à la poursuite d’une Ferrari à travers le tunnel de Monaco au milieu des années 70.
La voiture – dans la spécification World Touring Car – a été présentée au Festival of Speed de Goodwood dans le cadre du concours WTCC Art Car en juin dernier. Son design spectaculaire a connu un incroyable succès populaire auprès des fans, qui a gagné le Prix de la plus belle Art Car WTCC.
L’événement de Zandvoort sera la première occasion pour les fans de voir le magnifique design de cette Art Car de façon dynamique avec trois courses disputées.
Les courses sont : vendredi 15 juillet à 14h, samedi 16 juillet à 10h et dimanche 17 juillet 17h.

Honda announced plans to enter the 2012 World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) with a racer built on the 2012 Euro Civic five-door hatchback. The car is powered by a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine, developed by Honda R&D, and would later race in Japan, China and Macau before a two car team joined the 2013 championship racing. Honda won the 2013 Manufacturers’ Championship in their first full season in the series, six races before the end of the season. However, Honda was unsuccessful in defending their title in 2014, as Citroën dominated the series in their first season.

HR412E by Honda R&D, le bloc 4 cylindres 1.6L turbo à injection directe qui anime la Civic du WTCC. Ce moteur développé au centre R&D de Tochigi est entièrement nouveau et il est décrit comme suit par Daisuke Horiuchi, le responsable du projet WTCC :

La Civic WTCC pour 2016 a eu un développement significatif de son groupe motopropulseur par Honda R&D avec son partenaire moteur, la firme Mugen Motorsports, structure crée par le fils Honda… him-self.
Mais, Mugen Motorsports n’est pas une filiale de Honda. Il s’agit d’une entreprise financièrement indépendante, même si, de par les liens familiaux, les connexions sont multiples entre les deux sociétés. En effet, Hirotoshi Honda, fondateur de Mugen est le fils de Soichiro Honda, fondateur de la marque Honda.
Mugen Motorsports (無限) est un préparateur sportif qui notamment fournit des pièces hautes performances pour les amateurs de compétitions automobiles. Mugen a également préparé des moteurs de Formule 1 est actuellement a recentré ses activités vers le tuning et team Motorsports avec des voitures Honda dans la série JGTC (Japan Grand Touring Championship) que l’on connait par son nom : Super GT スーパーGT (Sūpā GT)

A new Honda racing engine might preview the powertrain for the next iteration of the Civic Type-R. Honda‘s all-new engine will power its new Civic race car in the World Touring Car Championships next year. The engine, called HR412E, is a 1.6-liter inline-four with turbocharging and direct injection.
Honda won’t say how much power the new engine makes, so as to keep the car’s performance a secret from potential competitors. The car will be used in the 2013 World Touring Car Championship, and already has passed Honda’s testing regimen in Italy.
The reason this engine is so interesting is that it could have street-car applications. WTCC race cars must be based on production models, and Honda notes that lessons learned from developing this race engine could trickle down to regular cars. “We believe the innovations that have led to this revolutionary engine will also lead to benefits beyond the race track, helping us to further increase the efficiency of our road car engines,” the company said in a statement.
With that in mind, this race engine could serve as a test bed for a new street car, and the most likely candidate for a tamer version of the 1.6-liter turbo-four is the next European-market Honda Civic Type-R. The new car has reportedly been approved for production and should be confirmed publicly this fall. Honda is expected to show a concept version of the Type-R in spring 2013 before putting the car on sale in early 2014. The old Civic Type-R was killed off because its high-strung 2.0-liter engine didn’t meet stricter emissions standards. A smaller, turbocharged four-cylinder might allow Honda to produce Type-R-worthy power levels while still satisfying tough fuel-economy regulations.
Honda Civic WTCC car gets new look at this years’ Goodwood Festival of Speed
Honda has partnered with the Jean Graton Foundation to give the Honda Civic WTCC car an all-new look at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed. The Honda Civic WTCC will be one of four WTCC machines carrying a one-off artist livery and will feature within the FIA World Touring Car Championships ‘Art Car Contest’ debuting at the annual motoring event.
The car’s livery was designed by Dominique Graton, Art Director at the Jean Graton Foundation, and Philippe Ghielmetti and was inspired by Jean Graton’s most famous creation, Michel Vaillant. Graton created motor racing comic book hero Michel Vaillant in 1957 and has gained a cult following. The Honda Art Car Jean Graton, as it will be known, will feature a design inspired by the Michel Vaillant Art Strip ‘A Fond!’ in which Michel Vaillant is depicted chasing a Ferrari through the Monaco tunnel during the 1974 Grand Prix.
The Honda Civic WTCC will be on display inside the F1 Paddock at the Goodwood estate near Chichester, England. Car enthusiasts will have the opportunity to vote for their favourite livery via social media and the website. The winning design will be awarded at the Festival of Speed’s closing ceremony.
The Jean Graton Foundation showcases Jean Graton’s work to a new audience in a larger scale in a series of exhibitions.

Michel Vaillant inspired Honda Art Car Jean Graton will make race debut this weekend
Fresh from a significant victory at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the Honda Art Car Jean Graton will make its race debut at Circuit Park Zandvoort in the Netherlands this weekend (July 15-17).
A TCR version of the Civic Type R has been entered by the Jean Graton Foundation into the latest round of TCR Benelux at the historic Dutch circuit and will be run by Boutsen Ginion Racing.
Jean-Louis Dauger, Director of Development at the Jean Graton Foundation, will share the Civic TCR with factory Honda World Touring Car Championship driver Tiago Monteiro, who won twice at the series’ opening round at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium.
In deference to Jean Graton’s most famous creation, motor racing graphic comic book hero Michel Vaillant, the car will carry the number 13 synonymous with the fictional racer during the past five decades.
The inspiration for the Honda Art Car Jean Graton was the Michel Vaillant Art Stip, ‘A Fond!’, which depicts him at the wheel of his Formula 1 car in pursuit of a Ferrari through Monaco’s tunnel.
